In the state of California you are going to definitely need a business license. If the business is located in Los Angeles, you will most definitely need a business license. If this is a home based business, the same applies. If she's going to be hiring employees you will have to file for federal and state tax licenses. If your business name is going to be other than your own, you'll need a DBA. All the information on these filings are available to you online, but check this out. My Business License Nightmare!

This is from an email I received.

I'm not going to get into any lengthy details about this. but I've had the worst time trying to apply for a business license. Just as a warning to you people out there in web-land, don't try this at home or on your own. It left me seriously depressed, suicidal, and on some serious meds. No! Just kidding, but it was a hassle. Anyone out there have the same type of experience filing for business license? Hit me back!

Do I need a Federal Tax Identification Number for my small business?

A federal tax identification number (also know as an employer identification number or EIN), is a number assigned solely to your business by the IRS. Your tax ID number is used to identify your business to several federal agencies responsible for the regulation of business.

Any business offering products or services that are taxed in any way must get a federal tax ID number.

If your state taxes personal services, or if you are required to collect sales taxes on your sales, you need a federal tax ID number. All the government forms you will be required to file for your business will require either a Social Security number or a tax ID number.

It's safe to say that any business that has employees and/or pays any kind of taxes will need a federal tax ID.

Starting a Business

I've had the pleasure of chatting with several friends over the course of several weeks about something exciting--starting a business for fun and of course profit! For fun, yes! For profit—even better! Let's face it. If you're like me you might have some hobby or something you enjoy doing. My favorite hobby is graphic design. That's right!!! It's just a hobby! But someone turned me on to the idea of actually doing my hobby as a part time business. After the minimal amount of research, I found that turning my hobby into an enjoyable business is easy.

Mostly all the people I chatted with started their home based business first by not jumping into it, but instead they acquired everything they needed to register the business and they found it online.

The first thing they all told me was how to find a way to obtain the appropriate legal forms needed to establish the business. Most municipalities require that you file a business tax permit commonly known as a business license and since I am conducting my business from home, I also found out that I needed a home occupancy license.

I have to admit the research is time consuming, so to consolidate all my concerns regarding my permits and license, it was recommended by my online friends that there is a website I can go to that will help. How you can get a California business license.

In California it is required by the state to get the correct business license for your business, because this allows them to collect 1,000,000's of dollars in taxes that they need in order to pay for the services that they use for the public. For example if you live and do business in Los Angeles, you will need to file your business with the city/county/and or state.
